Jamaika: Criminality

Short overview about the main problem and how it happened

In Jamaika, there are a lot of social and criminal problems, which exist already a long time. Since the inflation around the world in 1980, the prices grew up because of the expensive US-Dollar. The import became more and more less. The export couldn't really grew up because of the prices and the minority of workspaces. They can' really built a good economy and especially the farmers suffered under this situation.
A lot of people lost a lot of money in this crise and couldn't recover from this hard time.
Because of this problem, the people from the land and the villages moved into cities like Kingston and Portmore with the hope of finding a job and becoming financial independent. But this couldn't really help them, because of the small living room and and the missing houses. The government from Jamaika tried to construct some flats and apartments for them, but that didn't change their social problems.


Problems in the cities

The people don't live as long as people from western countries. Because of the bad hygiene and the horrible circumstances, the criminality and the social difficulties grew up in the last years and play a big role in the population, especially in the life of the younger people. Drugs and extortion racket leave its mark on them and give the youth a bad picture of their future. The regime from Jamaika and a lot of unions support some criminal groups since 1970 and make money by supporting their illegal work. Also the young people haven't any chance of getting out of this circulation and grow up with this criminal situation. Most of them want to make money as fast as they can and deal with drugs or work in a criminal band.


















Death and clarification rate

Every year, a lot of people were killed by criminal acts. In 2005, nearly 1674 died because of social and criminal problems. If you want to make a picture of this, you can say that nearly 60 people of 100.000 inhabitants were killed by someone else. That is a lot more than in the USA, although there live a lot more people and similiar high social problems. In 2002, circa 5,7% of 100.0000 died on a criminal way.
The death rate take more and more place in the population and the government is not as innocent as it looks like. In 2006, 277 people died because of a shot of a soldier. But not only the crime rate seems very high, also the clarification rate is below average. Only 40% get a well clarification.

Prisons and drugs

The prisons in Jamaika have a bad hygiene and they are overcrowded with a lot of inmates. The drug trade is very popular for this country, because especially for South-america and North-america, its easy to bring a lot of the stuff into the other part of this continent. Estimates claim that nearly 80 tons cross the border of Jamaika.
Smuggling in Jamaika is big theme and a big part of the population join in these acts. Especially the coasts and the martitime regions (Küstenregion) are occupied with criminal groups because of the polices in the cities, who fight only against mafiosos there and not on coast sides.
Although the cooperation between the USA and Jamaika, it can't delete the high corruption between the workers and the civil servants. 'Transparency International' notices them on the 87. place of their report of corruption.
