Task I for the 21st February

German Defense Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg faces fresh accusations of plagiarism in his doctoral thesis. According to a report due to be published in SPIEGEL on Monday, he used the services of the parliament's research department for his dissertation, and didn't mention the author in his footnotes.
German Defense Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, under pressure following allegations that he plagiarized parts of his doctoral thesis, also used the services of the German parliament's research department for the dissertation, SPIEGEL has learned.

In May 2004, when Guttenberg was a member of parliament for the conservative Christian Social Union party, Ulrich Tammler, a civil servant in the department with two PhDs of his own, wrote an analysis for Guttenberg headlined "The Question of the Link to Faith in the US Constitution and Supreme Court Rulings on the Separation of the Church and State."

Tammler completed the 10-page document on May 13, 2004 and passed it on to Guttenberg's parliamentary office under the reference number WF III - 100/04, according to an article due to be published in SPIEGEL on Monday.
Even though members of Bundestag, or lower house of parliament, are only supposed to use of the department for work relating to their parliamentary mandate, Guttenberg included almost the entire article in his dissertation, with only minor word changes.
Tammler himself isn't cited in any of Guttenberg's footnotes. Only the parliamentary research department itself is mentioned, a footnote 83.

The 60 staff of the department are meant to help lawmakers fulfil their duties as members of parliament. The department's guidelines state: "The German Bundestag reserves all rights to the work of the Research Department. Publication and distribution require the approval of the departmental management."

Guttenberg has rejected opposition calls for him to resign but said on Friday he would temporarily relinquish his "doctor" title pending an investigation into the matter by the University of Bayreuth, which awarded him the PhD.
The affair threatens the political future of the aristocratic minister, one of Germany's most popular politicians, who has been tipped as a possible future chancellor.

TASK: Copyright? Mr. Guttenberg seems to have ignored copyright rules... How can you be sure that you don't make a mistake like this? Name some copyright rules according text work, videos, pictures and sounds you can use eventually in our blog...

  1. First it's really important to name the people who said the things you wrote or you posted.
It's not legal to pretend it's all your work, your own ideas, if someone else said or wrote what you want to use in your text.
So if you work with pictures, videos or everything else which hadn't been your idea, you've to write the name of the person who had those idea.
Mr zu Guttenberg hadn't done that. People who worked with or for him aren't mentioned in the text by footnotes, like Mr Tammler, who wrote an analysis for his headline, he's not named in anyway.

  2. Before one copies texts, videos, pictures or other, one should find out about the copyrights. if one copyright-protected files should give used one springs or citations!if one pulls Dates from the Internet which are protected by originators, it can come to accusations or similar one. We think one can circumscribe before one a text etc. copied, the text in own words.

  3. Mr. Guttenberg took the writings from other people, without saying that these writings were written by them. He suggest that these writings were from him and someone, who read his doctoral thesis would think, Mr. Guttenberg had written all the stuff. But Mr. Guttenberg doesn't have the right to suggest that the intellectual properties of other people would be his. When someone writes a text or draws a picture, you don't have the right to copy them and say it was your work. It's like stealing the ideas and intangible things from others.
For example, just think you would copy the mona lisa, say the world it is yours and earn millions of dollars with it. But you contravened against the copyrights from Leonardo Da Vinci.

  4. Only the author of a text has got the right to make his or her text public. If you quote something you have to make it clear that you have copied it from someone and you have to say from who or from whitch page you have copied it. You can't copy some things which you aren't allowed to copy, just like the FIFA logo. If you copy the FIFA logo you have to pay a money punishment. You can't copy things or texts without saying from who or where you have got it. This is the most important rule.

  5. You have to be sure, that you don´t break the copyright when you post some articles from the internet in your homepage or in a blog. The same is when you post videos or pictures from other persons. When you don´t add the source, the person can court you!
Dr. Guttenberg said that it was his idea when he presented a analyse that was written by Ulrich Tammler. He hasn´t the right to show the audience some things that were made by an other person and doesn´t say that it is from that person. It is unfair towards the other person. Maybe you´ll get a price for your artice and you don´t have done that work. A text saved with the copyright can be used but only with the right source and has to be cited.
Last year Google complained to YouTube because of a video that was copyrighted and shown. You can get very fast in trouble with the law.
    Be careful!

  6. If we wanna work with the text written by other people,
we have to change the text, becaus of the copyright rules.
The Copyright ruels say that just the person who was written the text is allow to work with the text.
The owner of the text, have to give you the lisence, that you are allow to work with the text.
Its like, when you buy a cd.
When you buy a cd in a shop you got the lisence of the band.
You are now allow to make a copy of the cd for using the cd at home, but you are not allow to make a copy of the cd to give the copy to a thirt person.

  7. Everytime you post something in the internet you have to be sure that you list the notes of the things you have copyed.
If you take something from a other person like a picture, videos, sounds or text work then you can't say that it's yours and you have to note the source.

  8. We think that you should be careful which texts, pictures, videos et cetera you use on your own side. If a text or similar copyright are protected you may cite them only with bibliography. Nevertheless, you should be very careful what you publishe and what not. Only if someone prohibit specifically, articles may not be published. Guttenberg has cited a text of Tammler without calling Tammler. Now his doctorate gets up.

  9. When I post something I always have to make sure that if I have some extractions of videos, pictures, texts and sounds I have to name the source of my information. Some things you can evidently pay attention to is that you sometimes have the chance not to copy but to share the link or embed a video. When you're not sure if you're allowed to copy let it drop.

  10. If we want to use the works of others or parts of them, we have to observe something. If we want to public a text declared as ours, it's our responsibility to mark the parts we have borrowed and to give the source of them.
For example the act of the german defend minister "zu Guttenberg" who didn't observe this rule. He took text work of the member of parliament Ulrich Tammler without declaring it as the mininster's work.

We have to observe to, that all work published is copy-protected automatically with the publishing. That means that if we quote parts of texts, videos, pictures, sounds etc., we have to do it like that:

"German Defense Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg faces fresh accusations of plagiarism in his doctoral thesis. "
