Irish forces by Pascal Stieler

The Irish forces aren't a big military group. They have only 10.494 active soldiers and about 12.000 reservists. The main tasks of these forces are to protect the civillians, help at UN operations, make peace between civillians like in their first operation in the Irish civillian war against the IRA (Irish Republican Army). The war started at the end of 1922 and ended in May 1923. The weapons were buried as a symbol of peace. Ireland didn't took part in the second world war but they mobilized their reservists.

Fact is that the Irish forces couldn't defend their country if another country like GB or Germany for example would attack them because the Irish forces haven't got many man power and not the best equipment. They would need help of other UN forces.

The equipment: Tanks: AML 20, AML 90 (33 pieces)

Scorpion (14 pieces)

Mowag Piranha IIIh 8x8 (65 pieces)

Also they have some frigates and destroyer ships but not many. The air force hasn't got big fighter jets. They have more AWACS and spy planes but not many bombers or fighter jets.

One important unit of the Irish forces is the Army Ranger Wing. This special force is like in USA the Navy SEALS or the US Rangers and Deltas.

After all the Irish forces isn't big and couldn't defend their country alone.

  1. Thank you for your post Pascal! I'm not sure if the Irish forces are such an important topic for this country... Why did you change your topic?

  2. Because there was too much information about Ireland and UK. I couldn't decide which information was important and which not. So I made about Irish forces. Please look at PAKISTAN. I have written a question there.

  3. What is the purpose of this article. There is no logical flow to the information, is it a historical review or a an appraisal of the current state of the Irish Defence Forces or both? Either way it's poorly written.
