River Shannon

With a length of approx. 370 km it is the longest and best known river of Ireland: The Shannon. Just 250 km of it are navigable. Nevertheless, through many bigger and smaller lakes a practicable distance of more than 1000 km, one of the biggest boat districts arises in Europe! Moreover, about the Shannon-Erne Waterway reopened in 1999 this boat district is connected with the North-Irish Erne-sea area which offers other possibilities for the boat vacation with his diversified sea scenery and river country.

Because there is practically no occupational navigation (some holiday boats except) on Shannon and Erne, it is an ideal area for the boat vacation. No driving licence is necessary for rent boats, in detailed installations the boat renters explain everything to you what you must know for your boat vacation. Moreover, extensive marks and navigation facilities provide for the fact that also novices have to fear no bigger problems.

The Shannon is drivable for rent boats of Killaloe at the southern end of the Lough Derg up to the Boyle River and the Lough Key to the north of Carrick-on-Shannon. The scenery is diverse, from the gentle hills in the south about the Irish lowland with pastures and meadows further to the regions rather hilly again in the north. Beside quiet river segments it is stamped of the Shannon by his both big lakes, the Lough Derg and the Lough Ree.

The Shannon district is the
best known part of the Irish water ways and in the season is well visited accordingly. Along the river there is a huge number of the public investors who often lie in the places and towns. Who makes a find with pleasure pubs and restaurants visited here fast. In the main season busy activity rules in many harbours and the lying "in the package" seems during the summer months more often.

In the Shannon there are only 9 sluices and 3 movable bridges. Using is trouble-free, because everybody of lockkeepers is served who are familiar with boat tourists very well. The big lakes with your open water surfaces are well marked and also are practicable without big foreknowledge. For driving on the whole Shannon district you must include in the plan at least

14 days!
