Johannesburg
Johannesburg is the capital of the province Gauteng and there live 3,900,000 people (estimation in 2007). It's 50 kilometres south of Pretoria. The area around Johannesburg has been inhabited for millions of years by pre-human peoples, so it's hard to say when it was founded. After someone found the first gold in Johannesburg in an area around Barberton and Pilgrim's Rest in 1880, the main deposit was found and it turned out to be the biggest gold reserve in the world.
Amos Masondo is the major of Johannesburg, it has several nicknames like "Jo'burg", "eGoli" and "Jozi".
Johannesburg has problems with criminality, like all other big cities in South Africa. It was even that dramatically that there were murders than deaths caused by car accidents. Today the circumstances are getting better and better, but Johannesburg is still getting called the most dangerous city in the world.
That's the soccer stadium of Johannesburg, it's called "Soccer City". It's the biggest soccer stadium of Africa and the final game of the FIFA world cup took place there.
