The main conflict was between the USA and the Viet Cong with help of North Vietnam. The USA had help from South Vietnam, New Zealand, South Korea and many states more. But the Viet Cong had help from North Vietnam (NVA), China, UdSSR and North Korea. Strategically, the Viet Cong were disadvantaged against the USA. But, because of the support from China and UdSSR, the Viet Cong had for example an AK-47 from UdSSR and mortar strikes from China which was more powerfull than any weapon of the USA.
One of the most important battles of the Vietnam war, was "Operation Hastings". The target of the NVA was to capture the South Vietnamese province Quang Tri, which was behind the Demilitarized Zone. The USA and South Vietnam pushed the NVA back towards North Vietnam. The troops of the USA weren't so heavily damaged like the troops of the NVA. 882 soldiers of the NVA were dead, 17 were captured by US troops and over 200 weapons could be ensured. The US troops only had 126 losses but 448 heavily hurt soldiers. This was a clear message to the NVA and Viet Cong. But three years later, 1969, the battle at the so called "Hamburger Hill" was a devastating shock against the US. The mortar strikes of the NVA made "Hamburger meat" out of the US troops. So thats why this battle was called "Hamburger Hill". The hill was called "Hill 937". The battle was interupted several times because of tropical weather changes and more things. Ten days after the start of the fight, the US captured the hill, but because of the reason that it wasn't usefull, the US leaved it. The US had 70 killed soldiers and 372 heavily hurt soldiers. The US had to use 1800 soldiers, 10 artillery batteries. And the US bombers droped 450 tons of splitter bombs and 69 tons of Napalm.
There were many other battles while the Vietnam war.
The Vietnam war cost about three million deaths, of which there were two million civilians. Four million people were heavily hurt.
The US lost the war. This war was one of the most violent wars in history, because the USA used "Agent Orange", which only should destroy the trees so that the NVA had no cover any more, but in "Agent Orange" was Dioxin, which caused cancer. Many years after the war, in Vietnam were still born babies with birth defects.
In the end I have to say that the Vietnam war shows us how violent war can be and that war is mostely useless. Thank you for reading my post.
