National Hockey League

The National Hockey League exist since 1917. It's the professional hockey league in north America. 30 teams are represent in this league. 6 of this 30 teams are from Canada and the other 24 teams are from USA. After the regular season the best teams have to play in the Playoffs in a best of seven mode for the Stanley Cup. The Stanley Cup is the trophy for the winner. The winner of the last season (2009/10) is the team Chicago Blackhawks. In 1892 the Stanley Cup was sponsered by the general governor of Canada (Lord Stanley).
All the names of the player, coaches and manager of the winning team at the final are written on the Stanley Cup. Furthermore every player of the winning team is allowed to take the Stanley Cup for one day. Some years ago the Stanley cup was a challange cup which goes to winning teams of other leagues too but since 1927 the cup only goes to the winning team of the NHL. The NHL is working with the American Hockey League and the EHCL toghether and so some teams of the NHL are connected with teams from the other league and they build Farmteams toghether. Farmteams are teams where the young players can collect game experience in the American Hockey League and then if they have collect much game experience they have the chance to play in the NHL.

  1. Nice article about THE Canadian sport and the NHL... I didn't know that the USA and Canada are cooperating so closely in ice hockey.
