Wimbledon Championships

Every year while two weeks in June/July the Lawn tennis Championships take place in Wimbledon, a district of London. It's the oldest and most important tennis tournament for all professional tennis player in the world. It's the third so-called Grand-Slam tournament of the year and the only one, which is played on lawn. The courts in Wimbledon are known as "hallowed lawn".







This is a court of the Wimbledon Championships.









At 9. July 1877 the first Lawn tennis Championships began on the site at the Worple Road in Wimbledon. They were organized by the All England lawn tennis and Croquet Club. First only men were allowed to play. In 1884 women were allowed to play too and the men could play in a seperate competitive in a duo. Since 1910 foreigners are allowed to play too and in 1937 you could see the Championships for the first time on TV.


The record-winner of the women is Martina Navratilova because she won nine times between 1978 and 1990.
The record-winners of the men are Pete Sampras and William Renshaw. Both of them could win seven times.
Martina Navratilova and William Renshaw made the longest Winning Streak. Martina Navratilova won six title between 1982 to 1987. William Renshaw won six title between 1881 to 1886.












In the background is the trophy for the winner of the women's and in the foreground is the trophy for the winner of the men's.


Only nine german professional tennis player could win this tournament: Cilly Aussem (1931), Gottfried von Gramm and Hilde Krahwinkel (1933 Mixed), Claudia Khode-Kilsch (1987 double), Anna Lena Grönefeld (2009 Mixed), Steffi Graf (1988 (single and double), 1989, 1991-1993, 1995, 1996), Boris Becker (1985, 1986, 1989), Michael Stich (1991 and double 1992) and Phillip Petzschner (2010 double).
